On Art Becoming Itself
I have been working on a very important art quilt over this year. It has great personal significance for me, for many reasons. I will find the words to explain once it is finished. In the meantime, I’m enjoying how slowly this art quilt is taking for me to do and finish. I don’t fully understand why I am not in any particular hurry to get it done, but I think it has to do with a duality of both wanting to get it “right” and allowing it to tell me what is “right.” Active listening in art creating.
This piece I’m working on has a strong voice, as most of my art quilts do. In fact, I don’t think any of the art quilts I’ve made have turned out exactly as I had envisioned them, but they are even better than I had anticipated.
Like our children, I can only guide my art quilts—and be guided by them in their own development. They will become who they want to be.
