CONNECTIONS (2019)

A modern contemporary piece about the connections we make in life: whether social or emotional, intellectual or artistic. These connections can be solid or broken, strong or weak, permanent or temporary…each one with a lifespan of its own.

This piece was originally inspired by a contemporary painting I saw. Once I began work on it, I could see the statements it was making about the connections in our lives. It reminded me of music. Music binds us and links us to ourselves, one another, and to the earth.

And so I created “Connections” to show how we are all linked to one another.

Desert Wind I (2018)

Originally inspired by a Danish door I saw, this minimalist modern art piece is the first in this series. It depicts the movement of wind across an open expanse of desert.

During the summers in the desert the winds are hot. Sometimes the heat feels relentless and burns you at your core. But in winter, the desert air is cold, cold, cold, and when the wind blows, it reaches into your depths and can still your heart.

The desert is not an easy place to live. But it is beautiful.

Both Directions at Once: a Tribute to John Coltrane (2018)

I originally built this quilt with simple stitching and titled it "All Blues" as a tribute to John Coltrane and Miles Davis and their eponymous album. When I first created it, the only quilting was running stitches separating and enhancing each separate color panel.

Then I read about a newly discovered 1963 recording by John Coltrane. It was released as "Both Directions at Once: the Lost Album" in late June 2018. This was in the middle of his free jazz exploration during the early to mid 1960s.

In honor of this new album, I decided to take my original creation and follow in Coltrane's free jazz footsteps with my free-motion quilting. I chose to quilt each color panel differently rather than have one quilt design covering the entire quilt. This technique allowed my curiosity to follow where the patterns, fabric, and threads led me, while still maintaining the overall story. It matched the idea of the album, with each music piece a different exploration, but all of them from that session compiled onto one recording.

Friendship (2018)

Those relationships we are fortunate to have with others, across time, across space, ever expanding and contracting according to our circumstances in life. We love, we make mistakes, we grow apart, and we come back together. All the while, the love that is in our hearts flows through our friendship.

A bud vase I bought at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix, AZ inspired this quilt.
