On Starting Over

Well the enthusiasm from my previous entry was short lived…

Sometimes you just have to start over.

On one of the pieces I have been working, I used a batting spray that had been guaranteed not to stain. It doesn’t, generally. After taking several days to quilt the whole piece, it looked terrific!

However, I needed to iron some areas of it. On the white fabric (of which there was a lot) the hear from the iron left some discolored spots where I had sprayed the batting spray. The spots were light at first, but experience has shown me that over time those spots darken. (A previous project with a different brand of spray. Hence the new brand.) I knew it was from the spray because of the splatter pattern on the fabric.

I didn’t want to start over on the piece, so I dabbed a strong bleach/water solution on the white fabric. It worked! It took out all of the discolored spots!

However, because it changed the brightness of the white fabric, it left some areas brighter than others. “No problem,” I said. “I’ll just dab all along the white fabric to even it out. Yes, that looks fine.”

Well, some dabs of bleach leached into the edge of one of the colored fabrics and could not be fixed. I tried all kinds of solutions, to no avail. It was now ruined. *Remember, I had already quilted the WHOLE thing. No way was I going to unstitch everything and attempt to salvage any pieces from it.

So I have to start over anyway! It was like it was fated. I have to say, that was depressing…(I’m over it now. I think.)

So now, I will start over and hope I am indeed rid of the sinister quilting Thanos who came to destroy my beautiful world. I am Iron (WO)Man. But still, it’s exhausting.
