On Shooting My Shot

My favorite lesson as an artist (and as a person, really) has been “shoot your shot.”

First of all, I might just make it, and if I do, congratulations! What a boon!

And if I don’t make it, well, chances are I will have another opportunity and I’ll have so much more knowledge going in: what my parameters and boundaries are; what factors are involved; areas to improve; areas to develop; things to excise. What I gain is so much better than waiting (and waiting and waiting) for the “right” moment to come along.

So I tell myself, “Go ahead and shoot your shot.” As Bruce Lee said, “To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.”
