On Perfection

I never was one for perfection, but even less so now. I make too many mistakes and if I worked to have absolutely no mistakes, I would never finish a piece.

Perfection isn’t attainable because there is no consensus on the definition. Who decides what is perfect? What is perfect for one person is not for another. The concept of perfection is capricious and ephemeral. It changes on a whim and then doesn’t last. What I thought was perfect last year I no longer think is perfect. What I believed to be flawed I now see as beautiful.

I don’t aim for perfection; instead, I aim for excellence. Excellence is achievable. It takes diligence and effort. It takes a lot of thought, hard work, maturity, patience, follow through, and time. My art quilts aren’t perfect, but they are excellently made. They aren’t flawless, but they are beautiful.
